* Free while AutoRadian is getting started. After that: $12 for the first 60 days, $5 for each additional 30 days. We'll give notice before it changes. AutoRadian is brand new and launching in New York first. We're looking to expand to other states as we grow.

Paperwork, state by state

We’ve organized state DMV resources to help you find the information you need. Requirements can change, so confirm current requirements with the state’s DMV before completing a transaction.

Every seller on AutoRadian is in New York today, so the seller’s side of the paperwork is New York’s whoever buys the car. If you’re driving it home to another state, the second half happens at your own agency, and they don’t all want the same things.

These form names and numbers were checked against each agency's own site when written, but states revise and retire forms without notice. It is up to the buyer and the seller to confirm what is currently required by following the link to that state's own site before you meet. This is general guidance, not legal advice.

Certificate of Title
The seller signs the transfer section on the back and fills in the odometer reading. The New York DMV asks for every owner named on the front to sign.
MV-912
Bill of sale. Both of you sign it; the buyer gives the original to the New York DMV and the seller keeps a copy.
DTF-802
Sales tax statement. You each fill in your own part; the New York DMV collects any sales tax due from the buyer at the counter. How much, and any exemptions, is the DMV's call, not ours.
MV-82
Registration application, filed by the buyer with a New York insurance card and photo ID.

Worth knowing before you agree a price

In New York the plates stay with the seller. The New York DMV asks you to take them and the registration sticker off before the car leaves and to surrender the plates before cancelling the insurance; it warns that cancelling first can be treated as a lapse in coverage. Check the DMV's own page for the current steps.

8 states listed so far — the ones a buyer can reach from a New York seller today. More states will be added as AutoRadian expands.

Buy with your eyes open

The lien payoff, the tax and the title are between you, the other person and the New York DMV. How to close a sale safely covers the rest — where to meet, how to get paid, and what to check before you hand over money.

The sales tax, title and registration fees on this page are paid to the New York DMV, never to us, and nobody collects money for AutoRadian at the counter or the handoff.
